Community Outreach Activities
The Utilities Department believes in providing educational opportunities to the public on the importance of preventing the introduction of pollutants into our streams, rivers, and ponds.  Through educational approaches such as the Curb Marker Program, Enviroscape Model, Pet Receptacles, and Rivers Alive Cleanup, the City is able to demonstrate the impacts of the improper disposal of various materials that may end up in our waterways.

  • Curb Marker Program
Curb markerThe City partners with organizations to place curb markers on storm drains that read “No Dumping… Drains to Stream” and distribute door hangers with the curb marker logo on it.  The door hangers describe the problems with pollutants being dumped into storm drains and provide ways that to help reduce non-point source pollution.  All materials needed for a curb marker community event are free.  To set up an event, please contact the Stormwater Superintendent at (229) 259–3592.
  • Enviroscape Model
Stormwater Enviroscape ModelThe EnviroScape Model is a unique, interactive learning tool that helps people make a visual connection between land use and water quality.  This is an excellent and fun way to engage and educate school children.  To schedule a presentation, please contact the Stormwater Superintendent at (229) 259–3592.

  • Pet Receptacles
  • Pet waste receptaclesThe Recreation, Parks, and Community Affairs Department has placed pet receptacles throughout various public parks to provide a cost-effective solution to managing pet waste.  At each pet receptacle, you will find an educational sign, bags, and a trash receptacle.  For more information on the City’s pet receptacles and/or location, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (229) 259-3507.

  • Rivers Alive Cleanup
River cleanupEach year in October, the City of Valdosta partners with various organizations, including Keep Lowndes Valdosta Beautiful (KLVB), for Georgia’s annual volunteer waterway cleanup event.  The mission of Rivers Alive is to create awareness of and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources.  To find out more about this year’s cleanup, contact the Stormwater Superintendent at (229) 259–3592.
