In anticipation of another hot summer, the City of Valdosta is offering Mathis Auditorium as a refuge from the heat when temperatures and humidity in our area reach dangerous levels. The city facility, located at 2300 N. Ashley Street, is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for citizens at greatest risk of a heat-related illness.
People who are at highest risk of heat-related illness are the elderly, the very young, and people with mental illness and chronic diseases. The early symptoms of heat-related illness include profuse sweating, fatigue, thirst and muscle cramps. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea and vomiting, cool, moist skin, and dark urine. Heat exhaustion can lead to serious injury, even death, if not treated properly.
The City of Valdosta encourages all citizens to avoid strenuous physical activities during extreme heat and to remain indoors during the hottest parts of the day. Citizens may also endure the anticipated hot summer days ahead by drinking plenty of water and wearing appropriate clothing.
Mathis Auditorium will continue to be available for this purpose throughout the rest of the summer. Visitors will need to bring their own food, medication, and other items of necessity. No pets will be admitted into the facility, with the exception of service pets.
