Opportunities to Serve: The deadline is quickly approaching to be considered for four public service opportunities: the Valdosta Tree Commission – 2 vacancies; the Valdosta/Lowndes Zoning Board of Adjustments & Appeals – 1 vacancy; and the Public Art Advisory Committee – 1 vacancy. Applications for these appointments must be received by July 28, so that the Valdosta City Council can approve the appointments at the Aug. 5 Council meeting. In anticipation of another hot summer, the City of Valdosta is offering Mathis Auditorium as a refuge from the heat when temperatures and humidity in our area reach dangerous levels. The city facility, located at 2300 N. Ashley Street, is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for citizens at greatest risk of a heat-related illness. Special pick-ups are items which require special handling, such as appliances, furniture, or items which will not fit in your green roll-out. This includes garbage, which is not containerized, yard debris which is mixed with trash, building materials, and any other large items. Special pick-up charges vary.
