VFD Offers Practical Tips for Safe Summer BBQs
As citizens engage in a variety of summer activities—such as summer vacations, camping trips, family reunions, and picnics—Valdosta Fire Chief J.D. Rice wants to remind local “grill masters” of some practical outdoor barbequing tips that will ensure a safe and fun summer.
Almost 5,000 people are injured by charcoal/wood-burning and propane grill fires each year, according to FireSafety.gov. Here are a few safe outside cooking tips to help you avoid becoming a statistic:
- Before using a propane grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line. Always check for gas leaks with soap and water before using equipment each season.
- Position outdoor cooking equipment away from deck railing, siding, and out from under eaves and low-hanging branches. Keep equipment a safe distance away from lawn games and other activities. Never grill in enclosed areas - carbon monoxide could be produced.
- Keep a 3-foot “kid and pet-free zone” around cooking equipment. Remember to keep lighters and matches up out of children’s reach.
- Always use proper starter fluid, not any other flammable or combustible liquid. Never add more starter fluid after coals are all ready lit, because the flames can flashback up into the container and explode.
- Wear short sleeves or tight fitting clothing while cooking at the grill, and use long-handled grilling tools and hot pads/mitts.
- Always turn propane off after each use at the tank. Never store propane bottles in a room with an open flame (any appliance with a pilot light).
- Dispose of hot coals properly - douse them with plenty of water, and stir them to ensure that the fire is out. Never place them in plastic, paper or wooden containers.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
- Make sure everyone knows to Stop, Drop and Roll in case a piece of clothing does catch fire. Call 911 immediately if a burn warrants serious medical attention.
“Summer should be a time for having fun and making happy memories,” said Chief Rice. “Practicing these fire safety tips and following instructions will help everyone have a safe summer.”
