Assistant City Manager
The primary function of the Assistant City Manager is to provide direct support to the City Manager with city-wide administration support. The Assistant City Manager oversees the operations of the Public Works, Engineering, Utilities, and Finance Departments. He also oversees the Public Information, Information Technology, Main Street, Community Protection, Planning and Zoning and Development Services Divisions.
Mark Barber is the Assistant City Manager for the City of Valdosta, a position he has held since December 2015. He served as the Deputy City Manager for Administration, August 2007-December 2015; and served as the Finance Director, October 2000-August 2007. Prior to joining the City of Valdosta, Mark was the Director of Financial Services and Risk Management for the City of Thomasville, Georgia. He is approaching 30 years of service in municipal government.
Mark is a graduate of Lowndes High School and Valdosta State University, where he received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Accounting. He is a member of the Government Finance Officers Association and the Georgia Government Finance Officers Association (GGFOA). He chaired numerous committees for GGFOA and served as State President of the organization. Mark resides in Lowndes County with his wife Judy, and they have two children Landon and Victoria, and one grandson, Bentlie. They are members of Redland Baptist Church.
