POSITION OVERVIEW:

The City of Valdosta is accepting applications for the position of Captain in the Fire Department. This position is responsible for supervising and participating in assigned functions of the Fire Department, including those associated with the Training Division, Special Operations Division and Airport Fire and Rescue Station. Develops and implements the department's training programs for firefighting, emergency medical, and other emergency response services and programs. Develops and manages the department's training calendar. Instructs Fire Officer Classes to meet ISO standards. Oversees the recruitment and training of new firefighters; directs the operations of the Recruit Firefighter Training Academy. Prepares lesson plans for classroom or drill field instruction. Evaluates the training needs of the department based on discussions with supervisors and other members of the department, review of accident reports, observations of emergency scenes, and review of national standards. Coordinates department participation in external training programs, seminars, and conferences. Coordinates the implementation of training drills. Maintains files and records. Prepares a variety of regular and special reports. Oversee the daily operations and personnel assigned to the Airport Fire and Rescue Station. Assist in conducting Haz-Mat site surveys, community risk reductions and code enforcement. Coordinate classes and training with Georgia Fire Academy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of modern firefighting techniques and equipment, laws and regulations relating to the control and prevention of fires, department and city policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and regulations, firefighter training standards and guidelines, hazardous materials identification and incident mitigation standards, GSAR (Georgia Search and Rescue) or Specialize Technical Rescue Teams, computers and job-related software programs, capabilities and uses of emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Skills in operating emergency vehicles and equipment, supervision of personnel, use of radio/communications equipment, planning, organization, and decision making, public speaking and public relations, oral and written communication.
  • Internal candidates must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Lieutenant or equivalent rank and a minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a Training Division. 
  • External candidates must have a minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a career Firefighter and three (3) years working at the rank equivalent to a Lieutenant in the Training Division or similar capacity with a career fire department.
  • Live Burn Instructor Certification
  • NPQ or IFSAC Firefighter II Certification
  • Incident Safety Officer
  • NPQ or IFSAC Instructor II Certification
  • NPQ or IFSAC Fire Officer III Certification
  • NPQ or IFSAC Fire Officer IV (Effective Date – December 31, 2017)
  • National Registry EMT Certification (Effective Date – December 31, 2017)
  • Associate’s Degree in Fire Science/Administration/Protection or related field from an  accredited institution (Effective Date - December 31, 2019)
  • High School or GED from an accredited school
  • A valid Driver’s License
  • Must satisfactorily complete the required background check, pre-employment physical and drug test.

RESIDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The candidate must live within a 60-mile radius of Fire Station 1 (106 South Oak Street, Valdosta, Georgia) within one (1) year of the appointment date. 

SALARY ENHANCEMENT:

Personnel who have successfully completed an Associate’s degree are eligible to receive a yearly bonus of $1,000 to their annual base salary.

Personnel who have successfully completed a Bachelor’s degree are eligible to receive a yearly bonus of $2,000 to their annual base salary.
