June 28-30 The Georgia Search and Rescue (GSAR) Team, Task Force 2, has been requested to participate in HURREX, the statewide Hurricane exercise coordinated by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. The purpose of the exercise, which involves the Valdosta Fire Department and multiple state agencies, is to practice emergency readiness and response to significant hurricane landfall and destruction.

 

June 30 Valdosta Technical College, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Valdosta will host a community celebration in recognition of our recent Georgia Work Ready Community of Excellence designation. The celebration will be held Wednesday, June 30, at 4 p.m., in the Valdosta City Hall Annex Multi-Purpose Room, located at 300 N. Lee Street. July 4 The annual Spirit of America fireworks show will take place on Sunday, July 4, beginning at 9:30 p.m., for the Valdosta-Lowndes County community. The best location to view the fireworks display is on the east side of I-75 around the Valdosta Mall/Norman Drive area. July 5 The City of Valdosta will be closed on Monday, July 5, 2010, in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. The Sanitation Division will collect residential garbage ONLY on July 5. Citizens should place their green rollouts at the curbside by 6 a.m. on Monday to ensure their garbage is collected. Sanitation pick up services for recyclables and yard waste WILL NOT be available on July 5, but will resume on Tuesday, July 6, for both Monday and Tuesday routes. Now through July 7 There is still time to vote in the 2010 City of Valdosta People’s Choice Photo Contest at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. Citizens can view 128 contest entries in the Tillman Gallery and participate in the voting process through July 7, while enjoying several other galleries of fine art. A special reception will take place at the art center on Monday, July 12, where the winners will be announced and a special sesquicentennial presentation will be made to the city in observance of the 150th celebratory year.
