Mayor & Council Goals

Fiscal Year 2017

The following goals were approved at the Mar 18-19, 2016 Mayor-Council Retreat.

  1. Approve the compensation plan and make every effort to identify revenue sources to budget the plan as presented.
     
  2. Improve and strengthen ordinances related to nuisance violations such as grass and property maintenance to include strengthening priorities for repeat offenders.
     
  3. Agree on a Service Delivery Strategy Agreement with Lowndes County and all municipalities based upon the most effective and efficient manner to deliver services and what is in the best interest of the taxpayer.
     
  4. Study and develop recommendations to address traffic flow and traffic volume management in the entire Valdosta Mall area.
     
  5. Develop a plan to improve traffic flow and management citywide by use of fiber to create a connected traffic signal system with more timed routes, incorporation of new smart signals, and to fully utilize the Traffic Management Center.
     
  6. Continue to operate the city in a fiscally responsible manner meeting the current and future needs of the city recognizing a need to identify future revenue sources for funding of the priority initiatives.
     
  7. Continue to work in partnership with the Valdosta-Lowndes Development Authority and others to enhance economic development in the city and the community.
     
  8. In collaboration with the Housing Authority develop a plan to gain public and private support for a mixed use housing development.
     
  9. Meet with Conference Center and Tourism Authority and reactivate the Municipal Auditorium Steering Committee to discuss a public facility project to include funding, location, sale of Mathis Auditorium and a timeline.
     
  10. In partnership with the CVDA, continue to support economic development downtown by construction of a parking deck at the existing Toombs Street parking lot.
     
  11. Continue to pursue flood relief with the USACE to lead the effort for both studying the regional water shed and funding projects to resolve the flooding.

  12. Collaborate with community and regional leaders to continue advocacy efforts on behalf of Moody Air Force Base in support of its value to national defense and our community and seek opportunities for base growth and expansion in preparation for future Base Realignment and Closure Commissions (BRAC).

Fiscal Year 2016 

The following goals were approved at the Jan. 9-10, 2015 Mayor-Council Retreat.

1. Continue to pursue flood relief and USACE to lead the effort for both studying the regional watershed and funding projects to resolve the flooding.

2. Continue to carry out wastewater related projects with a goal of completing projects within designated timelines.

3. Hold meetings with the County and the School Board to discuss common issues and concerns.

4. Reactivate the Municipal Auditorium Steering Committee to discuss project, funding, sale of Mathis, needs of the SGMC, etc.

5. Study the Tree and Landscape Ordinance and Nuisance Ordinance (yard, bushes, etc.) to include a review of fees and penalties.

6. Contract for business development and advocacy support person to enhance economic development.

7. Work to utilize CDBG funds for the development of the comprehensive plan and creation of a strategic plan to address issues such as job training, housing, economic development and employment.

8. Make an effort the implement the compensation plan based on financial resources.

9. Coordinate meetings with property owners in the Perimeter Road area to pursue master planning of infrastructure and future development.

10. Hold a meeting with the Housing Authority with a goal to visit the Fellwood Savannah development to gain public and private support for mixed use housing development.

11. Review revenue sources and expenses in order for the City to continue to operate in a fiscally responsible manner.

12. Collaborate with community and regional leaders to continue advocacy efforts on behalf of Moody Air Force Base in support of its value to national defense and our community and seek opportunities for base growth and expansion in preparation for future Base Realignment and Closure Commissions (BRAC).

Fiscal Year 2015 

1.  Bid, award contract and begin construction of the Force Main Project.

2.  Bid, award contract and begin construction of the WWTP.

3.  Implement the SPLOST VII projects as approved.

4.  Develop a Request for Proposal and secure software/hardware for technology upgrades for the Municipal Court and the Valdosta Police Department to assist in more efficiency in operation.

5.  Work with the Industrial Authority and other appropriate entities to address the need for improvement and enhancement of broadband throughout the county.

6.  Develop a plan for improvement to the gateways and entrances into the city and begin implementation.

7.  Broaden City Government 101 to include up to five (5) slots for high school seniors from the local schools who have a parent in the program.

8.  Identify additional revenue sources and/or expense reductions in order for the City to continue to operate in a fiscally responsible manner.

9.  Collaborate with community and regional leaders to continue advocacy efforts on behalf of Moody Air Force Base in support of its value to national defense and our community and seek opportunities for base growth and expansion in preparation for future Base Realignment and Closure Commissions (BRAC).

10. Work with the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority and the Regional Economic Development Authority to host a regional economic development summit to bring recognition, awareness and opportunities to our city and region.

11. Continue collaboration with the USACE and work with state and federal officials to seek funding and identify solutions to address regional flooding issues.

12. Adopt a new Code of Ordinances.
