City of Valdosta to Dedicate Jeanette Newbern Coody Shelter
The City of Valdosta invites the public to attend the ribbon cutting and dedication of the Jeanette Newbern Coody Shelter, formerly known as the Craig Center, on Friday, August 14, at 10 a.m. at 1104 W. Gordon Street.
The newly renamed shelter will serve as the City's warming and cooling shelter, providing a safe and welcoming refuge for residents during periods of extreme heat and severe cold. Renaming the facility in honor of Jeanette Newbern Coody recognizes a lifetime devoted to serving others and reflects the shelter's continued mission of providing safety, comfort, and hope to those in need.
Mrs. Coody was a trailblazer whose compassion transformed lives throughout South Georgia. As the founder of The Haven, Valdosta's first shelter for victims of domestic violence, she established a critical resource that has provided safety, advocacy, and support to countless women and families seeking refuge from abuse. Her vision and determination created a legacy of hope that continues to impact lives today.
In addition to her groundbreaking work as an advocate, Mrs. Coody dedicated many years of service to Levi Strauss & Co., where she was known for her leadership, integrity, and commitment to improving the lives of those around her. Throughout her life, she championed causes that strengthened families, empowered women, and inspired others to serve their communities with compassion.
The decision to rename the shelter honors a woman whose life's work embodied resilience, service, and an unwavering commitment to helping those facing difficult circumstances.
Former Interim City Manager Al Crace, who helped lead the effort to rename the facility, reflected on the significance of the dedication.
"When we considered renaming this facility, it became clear that no name better represents its purpose than Jeanette Newbern Coody. Jeanette devoted her life to ensuring that people facing some of life's greatest challenges had a place of safety, hope, and compassion. Through her work establishing The Haven and her unwavering commitment to serving our community, she demonstrated what it means to put others first. It is a fitting tribute to a woman whose impact on Valdosta will be felt for generations."
