Mayor & Council Goals

Fiscal Year 2020

The following goals and action items were approved at the March 15-16 Mayor-Council Strategic Initiatives Summit (SIS).

Goals:

  1. Development Authority and others to enhance economic development in the City and the community.  Continue to work in partnership with the Valdosta-Lowndes Development Authority
     
  2. Continue to operate the City in a fiscally responsible manner
     
  3. Collaborate with the community and regional leaders to continue advocacy efforts on behalf of Moody Air Force Base in support of its value to national defense and our community and seek opportunities for base growth and expansion in preparation for any potential future Base Realignment and Closure Commissions (BRAC)
     
  4. Conduct meetings of City elected officials and staff with school system and parents to identify and encourage good life decisions for our youth and to help prepare them for future success
     
  5. Form committee & conduct study for Public Transportation for the City of Valdosta
     
  6. Develop a plan to review and revise the city charter in phases – Mayor will appoint a review committee
     
  7. Revise the Entertainment Ordinance for Downtown Valdosta to accommodate Special Event privileges
     
  8. Hold quarterly meetings with the county and neighbor cities to ensure mutual growth and collaborative planning

Action Items:

  1. In collaboration with the Valdosta Housing Authority, develop a plan to gain public and private support for a mixed-use housing development
  2. Report/brainstorm with planning and zoning other ways to encourage in-fill development and commercial/residential development in the city
  3. Update sidewalk/pedestrian/Bicycle Master Plan
  4. Research other revenue sources to be beneficial for the City of Valdosta
  5. Explore options to clean and enhance the beauty of Valdosta through partnerships and community engagement
  6. Work on revamping downtown programs to generate more interest and energy downtown

Fiscal Year 2019

The following goals and action items were approved at the March 16-17 Mayor-Council Strategic Initiatives Summit (SIS).

Goals:

  1. Continue to work in partnership with the Valdosta-Lowndes Development Authority and others to enhance economic development in the city and the community.
  1. In collaboration with the Valdosta Housing Authority, develop a plan to gain public and private support for a mixed-use housing development.
  2. Continue to operate the city in a fiscally responsible manner.
  3. Collaborate with the community and regional leaders to continue advocacy efforts on behalf of Moody Air Force Base in support of its value to national defense and our community and seek opportunities for base growth and expansion in preparation for any potential future Base Realignment and Closure Commissions (BRAC).
  4. Hold meetings of city elected officials and staff with the city school system and parents to identify and encourage good life decisions for our youth and to help prepare them for future success.
  5. Develop and implement a "saggy pants" ordinance to instill a sense of pride in the community.
  6. Research and recommend the implementation of a "Redevelopment Tax Incentive Ordinance" for council action.
  7. Appoint a facilities committee to study, evaluate, and recommend improvements to existing facilities or expansion/replacement of city facilities.
  8. Promote and encourage raising the median income by bridging with the K-12 and higher education to develop a workforce prepared to take advantage of higher paying jobs.
  9. Develop a listing of SPLOST VIII projects.

Action Items:

  1. Approve a Resolution to pursue litigation against leading opioid manufacturers.
  2. Use Brinson, Askew, Berry (Rome, Ga) law firm for litigation as recommended by city
    attorney.
  3. Appoint a committee to review and modify components of the Overlay Districts.
  4. Find out the cost for City to house two buses and find out who services and maintains buses
    for Valdosta State University.
  5. Continue discussion on Mayor Pro Tem selection.
  6. Consider use of SPLOST VIII funds for renovations to Woodlawn Park Part 2.
  7. Explore options for city entranceway lighting.
  8. Continue discussion regarding Mayor/Council salaries.
  9. Explore options to clean and enhance the beauty of Valdosta.
  10. Consider use of SPLOST VIII funds for sidewalks on Northside and Connell.
  11. Consider use of SPLOST VIII funds for renovations to parks on Bemiss/Tyndall to include
    bathrooms and basketball courts.
  12. Host a stakeholder meeting to pursue new and updated technology.
  13. Work on revamping downtown programs to generate more interest and energy
    downtown.
  14. Provide council with a listing of new businesses in the city so councilmembers can
    welcome and thank the new businesses.
  15. Connect with Georgia Power regarding the utilization of their power poles to place visual
    aids in strategic locations to bring more attention to VSU.
