City of Valdosta Provides Update on Major West Street Reconstruction
The City of Valdosta is continuing a major reconstruction project along West Street, spanning approximately one-half mile from Gordon Street to River Street. This significant infrastructure investment is designed to improve roadway conditions, drainage, and long-term safety for residents and motorists in the area. The project presents unique challenges due to the public right-of-way being approximately 30 feet wide, compared to the standard 60-foot roadway width.
The project includes the complete reconstruction of West Street into two paved travel lanes, along with the installation of underground drainage infrastructure. The new drainage system will eliminate existing open ditches, enhancing stormwater management and neighborhood safety while also improving the overall appearance of the corridor.
Due to the residential nature of the area, the project is considered more complex than standard roadway improvements. Approximately 65 residential buildings will be directly affected throughout the construction process. The City is committed to working closely with residents to minimize disruptions and maintain access to homes as work progresses.
Construction is estimated to take approximately 24 months to complete. Throughout the duration of the project, residents and motorists can expect periodic traffic adjustments, temporary access changes, and construction-related impacts.
The City of Valdosta appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents as this important infrastructure improvement is completed. Updates regarding construction phases, traffic impacts, and project milestones will be shared as they become available.
