Georgia EPD Declares Statewide Drought Response Level 1; Community Encouraged to Support Conservation Efforts
On April 27, 2026, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) declared a Statewide Drought Response Level 1 for public water systems utilizing both surface water and groundwater sources. The declaration follows continued dry conditions and reduced rainfall across the state, which have placed increased demand on available water supplies.
While this designation reflects a precautionary conservation measure, it underscores the importance of responsible water use to help protect long-term water reliability for communities.
Residents are encouraged to take simple, practical steps to reduce unnecessary water use, including regularly checking for and repairing leaks inside and outside the home, turning off taps when not in use, and avoiding overwatering of landscapes. When watering outdoor areas, citizens are asked to ensure irrigation is directed only toward vegetation and not onto pavement or streets.
Under Drought Response Level 1, general landscape watering is permitted between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. daily. Certain essential activities remain allowed at any time, including irrigation of personal food gardens, watering of newly installed or replanted vegetation for up to 30 days after installation, drip irrigation or soaker hose use, and hand watering with a hose equipped with an automatic shutoff or handheld container.
Outdoor watering is not permitted between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Officials note that the current conditions are the result of extended dry weather patterns and sustained demand on water resources. Conservation efforts by residents and businesses play a critical role in maintaining system stability during this period.
Community members are asked to assist by minimizing unnecessary outdoor water use, addressing leaks promptly, and considering delaying non-essential landscaping projects until conditions improve.
