Help Honor the Heroes: Valdosta Fire Department Seeks Volunteers for 25th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial 5K
The Valdosta Fire Department invites the community to come together in remembrance, reflection, and gratitude during its 6th Annual 9/11 Memorial 5K on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in downtown Valdosta. This year's event holds special significance as the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The annual memorial run honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, as well as the courageous firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel, military members, and other first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.
Participants are encouraged to run, walk, or simply come together in remembrance while paying tribute to the heroes whose legacy continues to inspire generations. Community members are also encouraged to line the racecourse with patriotic signs, American flags, and red, white, and blue attire to create a meaningful atmosphere of support and remembrance.
"This event is about more than crossing a finish line," said Lt. Melissa Roe, event coordinator for the Valdosta Fire Department. "It is an opportunity for our community to pause, remember those we lost 25 years ago, honor the heroes who answered the call, and ensure that future generations never forget the sacrifices made on September 11. Every participant and volunteer helps keep that promise alive."
To commemorate the 25th anniversary, the Valdosta Fire Department is introducing a limited-edition commemorative hooded sweatshirt featuring a one-of-a-kind design. Sweatshirts are available for $30, with shipping available for an additional $10.
"This memorial run represents the values that define the fire service, courage, sacrifice, and service above self," said Fire Chief Marcus Haynes. "As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we invite our community to stand with us in honoring those who gave everything. Their legacy continues to remind us why we serve, and together we can ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten."
