“Mayor for a Day” Kicks Off Georgia Cities Week with a Fresh Perspective on Leadership
For one day, the seat at the table looked a little different, and so did the view of City Hall. As part of Georgia Cities Week, the City of Valdosta officially kicked off its celebration by handing over the role of “Mayor for a Day” to Braeden Lampkin, a senior at Valdosta High School. The initiative provided a unique opportunity for a student leader to experience municipal government from the inside out while gaining a firsthand look at the people and processes that keep the City operating each day.
Lampkin’s day began with a one-on-one lunch and conversation with Scott James Matheson, where they discussed leadership, community, and the responsibilities that come with public service. He then continued his experience with visits to several key City departments, including the Traffic Management Center, Valdosta Police Department, and Valdosta Fire Department.
Throughout the day, he observed operations in real time and gained insight into the coordination, communication, and decision-making required to serve the Valdosta community effectively. The experience extended beyond a traditional tour by creating space for meaningful dialogue, thoughtful questions, and a deeper understanding of local government operations.
“What made this experience special was the opportunity to see the City through a fresh set of eyes,” said Scott James Matheson. “Braeden showed a real interest in understanding how things work and took the time to ask thoughtful questions along the way. It reflects what leadership should look like.”
Lampkin’s curiosity and engagement were evident throughout the day and helped turn each moment into an opportunity for insight and connection. His time as “Mayor for a Day” reflected the importance of civic awareness and highlighted the value of investing in the next generation of leaders.
“This experience aligns directly with the Georgia Cities Week theme, Love Your City, by fostering a deeper appreciation for the work that happens behind the scenes every day,” said Public Information Officer Sharah Denton.
The City of Valdosta extends its appreciation to all departments and staff who contributed to making the experience meaningful and memorable.
Georgia Cities Week continues through April 25, highlighting the essential services, dedicated employees, and community partnerships that make Valdosta a strong and vibrant community.
