  • Base Criminalist Salary (with incentives) - $51,712.36
  • Additional Incentives:

    • $1,000 annually for partial college or partial military

    • $2,000 annually for both partial college and partial military

    • $2,000 annually for full college or full military

    • $3,000 annually for a combination of partial military/college and full military/college

    • $4,000 annually for both full military and full college

Overview

This position is responsible for the analysis and documentation of a variety of forms of evidence.

  • Responds to crime scenes to identify, document and collect evidence; documents the scene through digital photography, sketches and notes; packages and documents evidence for chain of custody.
  • Analyzes items of evidence to determine the absence or presence of controlled substances, dangerous drugs, or listed chemicals; participates in proficiency testing; prepares written reports containing analysis results.
  • Utilizes a variety of tools and techniques to identify and preserve latent fingerprints; evaluates and compares fingerprint evidence.
  • Conducts physical, microscopic, and chemical examinations and comparisons of firearm and toolmark related evidence.
  • Performs serial number restorations on firearms and other stolen property.
  • Conducts firearm operability tests.
  • Performs firearms discharge residue examinations.
  • Maintains strict chain-of-custody in the handling and preservation of evidence.
  • Performs technical reviews of other criminalist work to ensure compliance with laboratory approved procedures, accuracy of work, and accuracy of report findings.
  • Generates detailed technical reports.
  • Assists in developing and updating laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Testifies as an expert in federal, superior, state and municipal court.
  • Performs related duties.

Salary Enhancement

Partial College Incentive Pay

Candidates who have successfully completed all major course work or all core curriculum toward their criminal justice related Associates Degree, as required for continuation toward a Bachelor’s Degree, as determined by the Chief of Police or his designee, are eligible to receive a bonus of $1,000.00 to their annual base salary.

Full College Incentive Pay

Candidates who have successfully obtained a Bachelor’s degree in a criminal justice-related field, as recognized by the University System of Georgia, are eligible to receive a yearly bonus of $2,000.00 to their annual base salary.

Partial Military Incentive Pay

Candidates who have successfully completed partial military service, as determined by the Chief of Police or his designee, are eligible to receive a bonus of $1,000.00 to their annual base salary.

Full Military Incentive Pay

Candidates who have successfully completed full military service, as determined by the Chief of Police or his designee, are eligible to receive a bonus of $2,000.00 to their annual base salary.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of forensic laboratory analysis principles.
  • Knowledge of laboratory policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations.
  • Knowledge of chain-of-custody laws.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and security procedures.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of the collection, detection, preparation, examination, preservation and documentation of physical evidence.
  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques used in the analysis of physical evidence.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, analyzing, decision making, and problem solving.
  • Skill in the storage and processing of evidence.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment, including a computer, calculator, and office software applications.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
