Overview
The City of Valdosta is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Accounting Supervisor to join our Finance Department. This position is responsible for overseeing daily accounting operations, supervising accounting staff, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. The ideal candidate will have strong technical accounting skills, leadership experience, and a thorough understanding of governmental accounting practices.
- Oversee daily accounting operations
- Supervise, train, and mentor assigned accounting staff; provide guidance, performance evaluations, and support professional development.
- Approve monthly bank reconciliations to ensure proper recording and resolution of discrepancies.
- Assist with the year-end close out process, including reconciliations, accruals, and preparation on year-end schedules.
- Work closely with external auditors, providing documentation, explanations, and support as needed to support the annual audit.
- Approve bank transfers and ensure proper documentation and compliance with internal controls.
- Prepare and file accurate and timely IRS Form 941 (Quarterly Federal Tax Return) and Georgia G-7 (Quarterly Withholding Return) reports.
- Monitor internal controls and assist with the implementation of process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Assist the Assistant Finance Director and Finance Director in preparing financial reports, and analyses as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel; experience with governmental accounting software preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong understanding of governmental accounting principles (GAAP and GASB).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 3-5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience required, preferably in a governmental or public sector environment.
- At least 1–2 years of supervisory experience or lead experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) required.
- Strong knowledge of governmental accounting standards (GASB) preferred.
