Zoning Technician
Description
Overview
This position performs technical assistance and customer service operations in support of the Zoning Division
- Answers telephone and greets visitors; provides information and assistance as the public’s primary first point of contact for the Division.
- Communicates with representatives of local and state agencies, attorneys, appraisers, realtors, builders and others to coordinate zoning requirements, review applications, exchange information and resolve problems.
- Researches property information and provides zoning approvals for building permits, zoning verification letters and zoning information for open records requests.
- Provides information on business licenses, permits, historic preservation requirements, and zoning issues.
- Receives zoning applications related to subdivision, variances, and administrative permits. Reviews these for completeness, calculates filing fees, initiates case files and prepares case maps and legal advertisements.
- Post-processes zoning applications upon their completion and maintains casefile archives.
- Develops Pre-Application meeting maps through GIS and distributes to appropriate personnel.
- Attends meetings and prepares draft meeting minutes for the Zoning Board of Appeals.
- Maintains office supply inventory, prepares purchase requisitions, manages budgets.
- Prepares and distributes Division newsletters, and maintains the Division webpage.
- Assist other Division staff as needed, and performs related duties.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of modern office principles and practices, as well as department and city policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs, including GIS-related programs and map development principles.
- Knowledge about zoning concepts and Valdosta geography, or the ability to quickly learn such knowledge
- Skill in the operation of computers and other standard office equipment
- Skill with Microsoft Office products, including the creation of forms, tables, brochures, and simple graphics.
- Skill in reading plats, site plans, and basic construction drawings..
- Skill in effective oral and written communication, map reading, organization and maintenance of files, technical writing and decision making.
- Skill in dealing effectively with the public and government officials.
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Business Administration or related field with two (2) years of professional work experience in an office setting, preferably government-related preferred
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for at least two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
