Firearms & Toolmarks

Firearm and toolmark examiners provide a number of services to assist law enforcement personnel in criminal cases involving the use of a firearm or other tool. The services include determining the type of firearm a bullet or cartridge case was fired from, determining whether a cartridge case was or was not fired from or cycled through a suspected firearm, restoring a serial number that has been obliterated or altered, determining the distance from the muzzle of a firearm to the target at the time the firearm was fired, determining the functionality of a firearm, and determining whether toolmarks were made by a suspected tool in the possession of a suspect. The laboratory is a partner with the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) and uses an Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS) Trax-HD3D to acquire digital images of fired cartridge cases from evidence from a crime scene or from test fires of crime guns. This network allows for the discovery of links between firearm related crimes more quickly and may even help to solve unsolved violent crimes.
