Our Services
The Planning Divisions work on a daily basis with City staff, the development community, and citizens at-large to ensure quality growth and long range planning in order to preserve the City's unique quality of life. The Division strives to educate the community on the importance of both short-term and long-term planning while effectively implementing the Greater Lowndes Comprehensive Plan and the City of Valdosta's Land Development Regulations

New LDR Text Amendments
The City of Valdosta Land Development Regulations are updated on a continual basis. The latest amendments approved by City Council were on December 5, 2019. All the individual chapters have been updated on our website along with the entire LDR link. Contact our office if you have any questions.
Community Planning Month
The city celebrates National Community Planning Month every October as promoted by the American Planning Association (APA). Community events are planned throughout the month to showcase Valdosta's planning efforts related to the annual theme. Stay tuned for further updates, or check out our events tab for Community Planning Month.
May is Historic Preservation Month
Created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1971 (first as National Preservation Week and then later National Preservation Month), this national observance in May each year provides a platform for communities across our country to honor their past and help build their future by celebrating the preservation of our cultural and built heritage. The 2020 theme for this observance is "Virtual Historic Preservation Month" in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The awards nomination form, as well as full Valdosta HPA rules and information, can be found on the HPA application or the Fillable HPA application.
Valdosta Preservation Awards
The Harold M. Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award and other preservation awards are presented each May during Historic Preservation Month. Nominations for next year's awards will be accepted in March and April 2026, with presentations being made by City Council in late May 2026. For more information, contact (229)259-3529.
